Newport Aviation Aircraft for Rent or
Instruction
We offer two types of airplanes for rental and instruction,
a Piper Cherokee and a Cessna 172. Either one is available so let us know
your preference of airplanes. If you don't know the difference, we'll let
you try both while you are training to see which one you like the most. Both
airplanes rent for $102/hour wet, while instruction in a
school-owned airplane is $47/hour. This equates to $149/hour
for lessons. Please see our Courses page for full information on what is required
for each rating.
Piper Cherokee (PA-28)
The Piper is our primary training aircraft. It is a single
engine airplane and has proved itself over the years, to many a pilot, thus
becoming one of the most used flight trainers of all time.
Cessna 172
The Cessna is also a workhorse, being the most popular
airplane ever built for training. Both aircraft are maintained by Chris Aircraft,
the co-owner of Newport Aviation, so maintenance is always top-notch.
Newport Aviation Check-out Procedures and Files for
Pilots
At Newport Aviation, we strive to make life as easy
as possible. We have included most of our forms and checklists for your
convenience. We will try to keep this page updated as much as possible,
but please keep in mind that forms do change. If we update our forms, we
will provide you with an updated copy for the records.
Rental pilots check-out procedures
As everybody knows, the insurance industry runs aviation.
In order to meet our insurance requirements, we require a flight in the
specific make and model airplane to be rented with one of our authorized
flight instructors. The flight will include any and all requirements the
instructor deems necessary to ensure safety of flight.
We also have some paperwork requirements, including
a Pilot's Information Sheet, a Pre-Solo Quiz (required
to be completed by all pilots), and a Rental Agreement. All
of these files are included below for ease of completion. If you would like
you can fill them out prior to your visit or we will have them on-hand to
fill out when you visit.
As all pilots know, checklists for airplanes vary from
place to place. Newport Aviation has made checklists for each of it's airplanes.
These are for general references only and all pilots are to reference the
Pilot's Operating Handbook for safety of flight information.
Other Files for Pilots
This is an assortment of other files we have accumulated
along the way. Feel free to browse and use as you require. If there are
any copyright issues, please do not hesitate to contact
us to clear up issues or to receive credit for the work.
If there are any known issues or problems with any of
these items, please do not hesitate to contact the webmaster for corrections.
Thank you and we look forward to meeting you soon.
These are the FAA Certificates Available:
This is what it takes to fly airplanes and the limitations on each type
of flying. Further information can be found at the FAA's website. Please
note that many people take more than the faa required minimum training times
provided below and that to each pilots certificate requires the successful
completion of a written, oral, practical, and medical examination in addition
to the training requirements.
Recreational Pilot:
The easiest way to earn your wings. With this pilots license you will learn
all the basics of flight and enjoy the feeling of soaring with the birds
up to a 50nm radius from Newport State Airport. The minimum number of training
hours required to earn this certificate is 25. While some of the priviligaes
of flight are limited with this certificate, it is perfect for those who
have always dreampt of flying under their own power.
Other Basic Restrictions:
Cannot fly for compensation or hire
Can only fly with one passenger
Can only fly in VFR weather conditions
Cannot fly in airspace where communication with airtraffic
control is required
Cannot operate an aircraft that is certified for more
than four occupants, with more than one powerplant, with a powerplant of
more than 180 horsepower, or with retractable landing gear
Private Pilot:
This is the first step for most pilots. A private pilots license will enable
you to fly in uncontrolled or controlled airspace as well as allowing you
to travel at any distance from your departure airport. Private pilots are
required to have 40hrs of flight training logged before receiving their
pilots license. This is one of the most versitile licenses offered by the
FAA. Additional ratings can also be added to this license for even more
options. These ratings include multi-engine, instrument, seaplane, etc.
Other Basic Restrictions:
Cannot fly for compensation or hire
Can only fly in VFR weather conditions (without an
instrument rating)
Instrument Pilot
This is the next step for any private pilot looking to become a better pilot
and increase the usefulness of his/her pilots certificate. An instrument
rating will allow you the freedom of flying in IFR weather conditions and
does not limit you to flying on good weather days. Approximately 60 flight
hours are required to earn this rating. If you are sick of getting "fogged
in" on Block Island, Nantucket, or Martha's Vineyard, this training
course is for you.
Cannot fly for compensation or hire
At least a private pilots license is required for
this rating
Commercial Pilot:
Finally, a pilots certificate that can earn you some money. Whether you
are looking to make a career in aviation, or would like to make a few dollars
flying on the side, earning a commercial pilots license is for you.
Can finally fly for compensation or
hire
Can only fly in VFR weather conditions (without an
instrument rating)

page will show what is required for each "license" or certificate. These requirements
are a minimum the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has set for each certificate
and should be looked at as best-case scenarios. All of our flight instructors
are FAA certified, meeting rigorous standards the FAA has set and receive
biennial training to keep their flight certificates and their instructor's
certificates up-to-date.
